Code of Conduct

Our mission is to foster connections among remote professionals who are interested in hanging out, being themselves, and sharing their struggles and successes. Sharing of content and personal projects related to our mission is acceptable and encouraged.

The Remote Buds Slack group is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form.

This code of conduct applies to every member of the Remote Buds Slack group. Anyone who violates this code of conduct may be sanctioned or expelled from the Remote Buds Slack group at the discretion of the admin team.

Remote Buds Slack group members are responsible for knowing and abiding by these rules.


The Remote Buds Slack group prioritizes marginalized people’s safety over privileged people’s comfort. The admin team will not act on complaints regarding:


If you are being harassed by a member of the Remote Buds Slack group, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact any member of the admin team through a direct Slack message. If the person who is harassing you is on the team, they will recuse themselves from handling your incident. We will respond as promptly as we can.

This code of conduct applies to the Remote Buds Slack group, but if you are being harassed by a member of the Remote Buds Slack group outside the Slack group itself, we still want to know about it. We will take all good-faith reports of harassment by Remote Buds Slack group members, especially the admin team, seriously. This includes harassment outside our spaces and harassment that took place at any point in time. The abuse team reserves the right to exclude people from Remote Buds Slack group based on their past behavior, including behavior outside the Remote Buds Slack group and behavior towards people who are not in the Remote Buds Slack group.

In order to protect volunteers from abuse and burnout, we reserve the right to reject any report we believe to have been made in bad faith. Reports intended to silence legitimate criticism may be deleted without response.

We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we’ve received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them, if we believe that doing so will increase the safety of the Remote Buds Slack group members or the general public. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.


The Remote Buds Slack group is place for industry practitioners to discuss their work, share resources, and help others grow professionally.

What's Permitted

We welcome members of this group to share blog posts, conferences, and other resources that may help someone doing this work or to gain support and visibility for such resources that may help others doing the work. However, make sure the things you're promoting are valuable and relevant to the community.

Example: You're teaching a workshop and you think members of the group would be interested in attending, so you post about it, explaining its direct application to content and UX practitioners if those details aren't immediately apparent.

What's Not Permitted

Please refrain from posting repeatedly or without context links to pitches, events, products, or services, or any such resources that are not specifically on topic for this community. Refrain from approaching other members directly with sales pitches.

Example: You submitted a pitch to a UX conference and want members to vote for it, so you post the link daily as the voting deadline draws near.


Participants asked to stop or correct any behavior violating this code of conduct are expected to cooperate immediately, whether asked by a member of the admin team or another member of the Slack.

In the event this doesn't occur, the admin team will approach conflicts within the following template:

  1. Repeat the request to stop.
  2. If the person doubles down, they will be given an official warning.
  3. If the behavior continues or is repeated later, the person will be deactivated for 24 hours.
  4. If the behavior continues or is repeated after the temporary deactivation, a long-term (6-12mo.) deactivation will be used.

On top of this, the admin team may remove any offending messages, images, contributions, etc., as they deem necessary.

The admin team reserves full rights to skip any of these steps, at their discretion, if the violation is considered to be a serious and/or immediate threat to the health and well-being of members of the community. These include any threats, serious physical or verbal attacks, and other such behavior that would be completely unacceptable in any social setting that puts our members at risk. In some cases, the participant may also be identified as a harasser to other Remote Buds Slack group members or the general public.

The admin team will prioritize the well-being and comfort of the recipients of the violation over the comfort of the violator.

That said, we understand that the amygdala makes conflict resolution hard, and will approach conflicts with the initial assumption that all parties intend well, and will favor education over escalation whenever possible.


This is based on Ethical Content Slack's code of conduct. That, in turn, was based on the example policy from the Geek Feminism wiki, created by the Geek Feminism community, as well as the WeAllJS Code of Conduct.
